Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI)

The Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) is one of the most essential components of our efforts to combat vaccine-preventable diseases in Syria. The EPI aims to provide routine vaccination services to all children, ensuring that they are protected against common yet deadly diseases such as polio, measles, diphtheria, and hepatitis B.

Key Objectives of EPI

Universal Immunization

The main objective of the Expanded Programme on Immunization is to ensure that every child, without discrimination, receives routine vaccination against vaccine-preventable diseases, while taking into account the four humanitarian principles (dignity, respect, neutrality, non-discrimination).

Wide reach

It targets all children under five years of age, women of childbearing age and school students in all residential areas, including remote and hard-to-reach areas.

Reducing mortality and morbidity

By vaccinating children early in life, the Expanded Immunization Programme reduces the burden of diseases that contribute to high mortality rates in northwest Syria.

EPI is integrated with other public health strategies, ensuring that every child receives a full range of vaccines on time. In partnership with local health authorities and humanitarian organizations, the SIG plays a pivotal role in keeping the programme running in northwest Syria.
